Solina: Dragonfly was installed on the grass lawn of Cary Town Hall, the center of the event. Bright and colorful, the 12-foot high four-sectioned fabric wings of the dragonfly were an attractor to the arts festival while providing shade during the August heat. Stretching out over the site, the 45 ft wing span was separated by the body and tail of the dragonfly The wings and body were illuminated at night, creating a warm glow for the craftsman/artists setting up their booths for the daytime festivities. The mouth opened wide to allow children to play inside the body of the sculpture while parents took lots of photographs. As part of community involvement activites, volunteers assisted the artist in installing and de-installing the sculpture.
Images also show table and chairs set up under of overhanging wings of Solina with young people enjoying the interactive craft activities provided free as part of the installation.. Developed by the artist and assisted by community student volunteers, a multitude of children were assisted in creating mini dragonfly wings of colored tissue and wire that mirrored the translucent colors of Solina’s wings themselves. Over the years, many of the kids and their parents returned to make a new mini-dragonfly for their keepsakes. Two young people show their creations to the artist.

"My sculptural environments are aesthetically pleasing site-specific artworks that connect nature and culture by employing the three legacies for regenerative and sustainable design of (1) environment: natural systems, (2) education: experiential systems, and (3) engagement: cultural systems. By using a variety of art media and fabrication methods to create sculptural open spaces that are intended to support personal rejuvenation and inspiration, my sculptures provide venues for environmental learning and community celebration.”
