Vessel is one of the sculptures installed in the Catherine Smith Gallery at Appalachian State University as a part of the 1991 Tri-State Sculptors Association Conference and Exhibition. This two story-high goatskin like Vessel is intended to focus attention on a global environmental concern of the loss of water resources. Lined with gold, the cup spotlights the precious nature of its proposed, yet empty, water contents. Similar to the way an hourglass depicts the changes in time, this only holding sand chalice symbolized our need to protect this life-giving precious resource before it is too late. Throughout the exhibition, a small hole in the bottom of the cone-shaped Vessel continuously emits particles of fine sand into the stone circle located on the floor of the gallery inner courtyard.
