Selected as one of 43 Boston’s artist for the 1990 Sixth Triennial Exhibition, Layne created this outdoor installation to represent the contradictory dilemma that seems to exist between the desire for security and the need to acquire new experiences through creative expression.  The teepee-like structure represents the spiritual center, the place of security with its bright fuchsia color and globe top resting on the shore of this lovely body of water.  Like in a dream, the structure seems to be protected by ancient myths and legends.  The series of ribs that surround the main structure remind us of the skeleton of some ancient creature. Supporting the crossed poles and rope barrier, the wooden platform has been cut in the form of a giant claw shape, together they protect our safe haven.  Stretching out into and floating in the lake itself, the platform structure seems to indicate that there may be opportunities to challenge the barriers that may surround us all.

"My sculptural environments are aesthetically pleasing site-specific artworks that connect nature and culture by employing the three legacies for regenerative and sustainable design of (1) environment: natural systems, (2) education: experiential systems, and (3) engagement: cultural systems. By using a variety of art media and fabrication methods to create sculptural open spaces that are intended to support personal rejuvenation and inspiration, my sculptures provide venues for environmental learning and community celebration.”
