The last of the ten design problems assigned by Michael Roy Layne to Design Fundamentals (DF 102) students in the North Carolina State University School of Design first year program. The challenge for the students was to test collaborative methods and to learn how to work with hand and power tools to construct a landscape sculptural form. The goal of the student project was to design and create an interesting and unique pathway that would allow people to experience the concepts of “ups and down” and “ins and outs” while traversing a public thoroughfare.
The sculpture was constructed initially in the School of Design courtyard and then disassembled and put up in downtown Raleigh as a walkway spanning the two sides of Davie Street and as a gateway to Fayetteville Street Mall. In addition, the purpose of the environmental sculpture was to act as a transition area between the two main aspects of the event, the visual arts and the performing arts.

"My sculptural environments are aesthetically pleasing site-specific artworks that connect nature and culture by employing the three legacies for regenerative and sustainable design of (1) environment: natural systems, (2) education: experiential systems, and (3) engagement: cultural systems. By using a variety of art media and fabrication methods to create sculptural open spaces that are intended to support personal rejuvenation and inspiration, my sculptures provide venues for environmental learning and community celebration.”
