Inspired by a childhood experience with a Hornet’s Nest, this gallery installation combines Layne’s memory with a sunset view of a misty pond of dead trees. This red bulbous conical form supported with a wooden platform walk, created an environment where visitors could experience the enclosed and somewhat scary nature of a Hornet’s Nest. The illuminated fiberglass pods seem to grow out of the bark of the multiple hanging tree limbs. As Artist-in-Residence, Layne employed college students to scavenge the natural materials used in the sculpture and assist in installing the artwork. When the gallery show was over, those same students were gifted the tree limbs with fiberglass pods which they used as sculptural lighting fixtures in their dorm rooms.

"My sculptural environments are aesthetically pleasing site-specific artworks that connect nature and culture by employing the three legacies for regenerative and sustainable design of (1) environment: natural systems, (2) education: experiential systems, and (3) engagement: cultural systems. By using a variety of art media and fabrication methods to create sculptural open spaces that are intended to support personal rejuvenation and inspiration, my sculptures provide venues for environmental learning and community celebration.”
