Many of Layne’s large-scale installations are inspired by the shape of seashells he has found while living on Cape Ann or visiting other coastal areas around the world. The goal of these artworks is to encourage people to change their sense of scale by visiting the insides of these shell shapes. Created with stretch knit fabric over PVC pipe rings and supported by a plaster base structure, Murex was installed in the cavernous Cyclorama as part of the 1989 BCA resident artists annual group art exhibition. Walking on a bed of seashore sand, visitors entered the slit-like opening, looked up into the cone-shaped fabric form of this large Murex shell and listened to the sound of the sea emerging from internal speakers.

"My sculptural environments are aesthetically pleasing site-specific artworks that connect nature and culture by employing the three legacies for regenerative and sustainable design of (1) environment: natural systems, (2) education: experiential systems, and (3) engagement: cultural systems. By using a variety of art media and fabrication methods to create sculptural open spaces that are intended to support personal rejuvenation and inspiration, my sculptures provide venues for environmental learning and community celebration.”
