As a landscape architecture graduate student in the College of Design, Layne’s master plan for the entrance garden for the NCSU Raulston Arboretum proposed the creation of a series of experiential pathways that would increase a visitor’s awareness of the eight human senses – sight, hearing, touch, smell, taste, vestibular, kinesthesia, and proprioception – through choices, diversity and levels of challenge. This layout is based upon barrier-free concepts using natural forms and plantings to create an environment accessible and enjoyable by all.

The innovative approaches and environmental sculpture ideas were instrumental in the design being selected for publication in Landscape Architecture Magazine.  Subsequent to the appearance in LAM, the design concepts were included in a Japanese research book that spotlighted accessible design ideas from around the world.

"My sculptural environments are aesthetically pleasing site-specific artworks that connect nature and culture by employing the three legacies for regenerative and sustainable design of (1) environment: natural systems, (2) education: experiential systems, and (3) engagement: cultural systems. By using a variety of art media and fabrication methods to create sculptural open spaces that are intended to support personal rejuvenation and inspiration, my sculptures provide venues for environmental learning and community celebration.”
