The landscape structure of Timed Flow including walls, arbor, patios, decks, fences, gates and ramps were all designed and installed in a particular pattern corresponding directly to the house plan and its entrances and outdoor viewscapes in order to improve the visual or spiritual continuity of the whole site. The selected materials of wood and stone reflect the client’s need for order while creating an ADA accessible environment. The plantings, flower beds, meandering paths and stream corridor are designed and built in opposition to this grid, providing landscape interest for the contrast between man-made and nature.
The stream corridor was reestablished in its original course using gravel as a base to clean and filter rainwater runoff and dry stack stone to retain earth while allowing for the free movement of surface and subsurface water. The stream banks on the garden side were installed shorter to those on the house side, thus protecting the house foundation and directing water into the flood plain area during high storm water surges. The original bridge was replaced with a wooden deck traversing the stream, creating a unique dining opportunity while allowing easy access from house to garden.
Besides creating the design, developing the stream restoration plan, and drawing construction details, Layne was responsible for construction management including schedules and budget. Along with the operation of grading equipment, his responsibilities included site construction supervisor. As a crew member of Joe Hardesty Landscaping Co of Raleigh, he worked with others to fabricate and install stonework, wooden site furniture, and plumbing and lighting systems.

"My sculptural environments are aesthetically pleasing site-specific artworks that connect nature and culture by employing the three legacies for regenerative and sustainable design of (1) environment: natural systems, (2) education: experiential systems, and (3) engagement: cultural systems. By using a variety of art media and fabrication methods to create sculptural open spaces that are intended to support personal rejuvenation and inspiration, my sculptures provide venues for environmental learning and community celebration.”
