Originally commissioned by the Mayor’s Office of Business and Cultural Development to be installed across the main sidewalk spanning the Boston Common as a focal point for the Unity Day celebration, this simple giant red and blue Unity Arch provided a sense of entry to the thousands of Bostonians who attended the event. Over the years, Layne has created several duplicate arches in solid red or in blue and white fabric. The arches have been used as an entryway and a performance stage enclosure for the annual Fall Arts and Crafts Festival held on Courthouse Square located in the center of Warrenton, NC. The red arch was also installed as entrance to the wedding ceremony of Layne’s friends Ray and Melissa Henderson held on the same Courthouse Square. Both the blue and red arches have been installed over the craft tables as part of Layne’s quarterly Solstice and Equinox celebrations held at his Legacyworks Studio gardens (see Quarter Days in Explore/Learn).

"My sculptural environments are aesthetically pleasing site-specific artworks that connect nature and culture by employing the three legacies for regenerative and sustainable design of (1) environment: natural systems, (2) education: experiential systems, and (3) engagement: cultural systems. By using a variety of art media and fabrication methods to create sculptural open spaces that are intended to support personal rejuvenation and inspiration, my sculptures provide venues for environmental learning and community celebration.”
